We all know that we should never wet an electronic device, be it a mobile, a tablet, a computer, or anything that flows electricity. However, not everyone knows exactly what causes water to come into contact with an electronic device, which damages it and is probably unusable.
Water does not get along with electronics
The water we have at our disposal contains dissolved minerals and electrolytes (such as salt). While distilled water is a very bad conductor of electricity, when substances such as salt or chlorine are added to it, it becomes an excellent conductor.
Electronic components operate within a specified range of electricity. In the event that the current through a chip, a resistor, or a capacitor exceeds its operating range, it is most likely to break. When breaking, several things can happen: a spark springs melts, explodes, or simply stops working.
The water in itself does not hurt at a particular point in the circuit. What does damage is the bridge that water helps to create between, say, two welding points. With this, a part that should not receive a certain amount of electricity receives it because the water is acting as a bridge between the two, which usually results in a short circuit. On a large scale, for example, by pouring a water bottle on a base plate, you can imagine the damage it can cause by making hundreds of connections that should not be made.
This damage occurs when the device is turned on. If we turn it off as quickly as possible we can significantly reduce the damage. In case we get a device that is off, if it dries quickly (a few hours at most), the damage may be non-existent.
Corrosion: the long-term enemy of electronic components
The problem of wetting a device in the long term is the corrosion generated by water (a metal, when oxidized, can break or lose capacities, as with traffic signals in coastal areas) or the minerals that can leave when it is dried.
Therefore, if we wait for it to dry, we can give it with a blower under pressure to remove mineral remains that may have been left over by unwanted contacts. If you are going to light a device that has been wet, make sure there is no trace of water or moisture.
To make impermeable motherboards or mobiles there are water repellent gels or sprays, which repel water and also help to protect your devices from rust. This could improve the waterproofing of the components of, for example, the movable ones, but also increases the manufacturing costs.
